The “Far Cry” TV series is building out its cast with the addition of Steve Buscemi.
Variety has learned that Buscemi will star in the series adaptation of the hit video game franchise alongside star and co-creator Rob Mac and previously announced cast member Lizzy Caplan. The series was first reported to be set up at FX in November 2025 from creators Noah Hawley and Mac. Exact plot and character details remain under wraps, but the series will follow an anthology format like the “Far Cry” video games and feature a different cast and setting each season.
This will be Buscemi’s first FX series, though the network does air Hawley’s series take on “Fargo,” with Buscemi having starred in the original film.
Buscemi is one of the most popular actors working today. In addition to starring in “Fargo,” he is known for other collaborations with the Coen brothers like “The Big Lebowski” and “Miller’s Crossing,” as well as films such as “Reservoir Dogs,” “Ghost World,” “The Death of Stalin,” and numerous Adam Sandler films. In television, Buscemi has received Emmy nominations for appearing in and directing “The Sopranos” as well as for his work on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” He won the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series for “Park Bench with Steve Buscemi” in 2016. He has also starred in shows like “Wednesday,” and “Miracle Workers.”
He is repped by UTA and The Gotham Group.
“Far Cry” will air on FX, Hulu, and Disney+ internationally. Mac will executive produce under his More Better Productions banner, while Hawley will executive produce under his overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television via 26 Keys. Simon Emanuel will also executive produce along with Emilia Serrano for 26 Keys, Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts, Monica Macer, Peter Calloway, John Campisi, and Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television. The series will be produced by FX Productions.
The first “Far Cry” game was released in 2004. Since then, five other games in the main series have been released along with numerous spinoffs. The most recent game, “Far Cry 6,” was released in 2021. More than 100 million unique players have enjoyed the games since their debut.
