THE STORY OF DUNITH WELLALAGE: FROM SCHOOL STAR TO NATIONAL PRIDE

Dunith Wellalage has emerged as a truly exceptional talent for Sri Lanka cricket. His journey, marked by remarkable skill, unwavering dedication, and innate leadership qualities, has made him a permanent fixture in the national team.


Born on January 9, 2003, Dunith Nethmika Wellalage began his cricketing journey at St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa. At the age of 10, he played for the school's Under-13 ‘C’ team. Within a year, he moved up to the ‘A’ team, showcasing his potential by taking 57 wickets in a single season. His outstanding performance earned him the 'Best Bowler', 'Best All-rounder', and 'Man of the Final' awards as he helped his team win the Under-13 championship in 2014.


 


A Leader on the Rise


Wellalage's talent continued to shine. At the age of 12, he took 53 wickets for the Under-15 team, representing Colombo and Western Province in inter-district and inter-provincial matches. His progression continued with his selection for the Sri Lanka Under-14 squad. In 2017, he transferred to St. Joseph's College, Colombo, where his leadership qualities flourished. He captained the Sri Lanka Under-15 team at the Tuanku Ja’afar Cup in Malaysia and played a pivotal role in guiding St. Joseph’s to the Inter-school Under-19 two-day cricket championship that same year. He then went on to represent the national Under-19 team against India and Bangladesh and led his school to a second consecutive Under-19 title in 2019.


 


The World Cup Breakthrough


Wellalage’s true breakthrough came on the global stage. In the 2021 Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai, he led his team to the finals. Then, in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, he captained the side to the quarter-finals and cemented his reputation as a top-class all-rounder. He finished the tournament as the highest wicket-taker and the seventh-highest run-scorer, a performance that captivated cricket fans worldwide. This tournament became the defining moment that paved the way for his entry into senior cricket.


National Call-up and Beyond


Following his World Cup heroics, Wellalage continued his impressive form in domestic cricket, representing the Jaffna team in the National Super League, where he took 9 wickets and helped them win the championship. He also led his school to yet another Under-19 Tier A championship title. His consistent performances earned him a call-up to the Sri Lanka Emerging squad for their tour of England, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker of the series.


All these accomplishments culminated in the moment he and his supporters had long awaited. Dunith Wellalage was called up to the Sri Lanka national team and made his ODI debut against Australia.


Today, his story continues to unfold, and Sri Lankan cricket fans, along with a global audience, are watching his journey with immense pride and respect.
