ICC considers 24-team T20 World Cup expansion

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering a major expansion of the Men’s T20 World Cup to 24 teams by 2032, as part of a long-term ambition to increase participation to 32 nations.

Reports indicate that the governing body aims to attract new global audiences following the successful transition to a 20-team format at the recent tournament.

The proposed changes could result in additional fixtures for high-revenue markets such as India, helping to maximize commercial returns and increase broadcast value.

However, critics have raised concerns over potential competitive imbalances and one-sided contests between established Test-playing nations and emerging associate members.

Supporters of the expansion argue that greater participation would benefit the sport, pointing to recent competitive performances and unexpected successes by teams such as Afghanistan and Zimbabwe as evidence of the growing strength of emerging cricket nations.
