The Melwa Group launched the Melwa Challenge Trophy 2026, an islandwide cricket tournament, with the successful conclusion of the inaugural Gampaha District Championship held on 29 July at the Walisinghe Harischandra Grounds.
The tournament featured 15 teams representing construction material suppliers, hardware dealers, masons and welding professionals from across the Gampaha District, highlighting Melwa's commitment to strengthening engagement with stakeholders in Sri Lanka's construction industry through sport.
The participating teams were Vajira Hardware, Sanasuma Hardware, Milestone Hardware, Weerawardana Hardware, Aruna Hardware, ESS Hardware, Liyanage Hardware, Negombo Kambi Centre Hardware, Ranasinghe Hardware, St. Antony's Hardware, Charuka Hardware, UL Iron Hardware, General Hardware, TNR Hardware and Sanjeewa Hardware.
Following a day of competitive cricket, Vajira Hardware emerged as champions, while Negombo Kambi Centre Hardware finished as runners-up.
Individual honours were also presented. Cheranga of Vajira Hardware was named Player of the Tournament, while teammate Nadun won both the Player of the Final and Best Bowler awards. Janaka of Negombo Kambi Centre Hardware received the Best Batsman award, while teammate Dayan was named Best Fielder.
The Gampaha championship marked the opening stage of the Melwa Challenge Trophy 2026, which will be conducted across multiple districts as part of an islandwide tournament. The next championship will be held in Ratnapura, with further district competitions scheduled across the country.
Champion teams from each district will qualify for the Melwa Challenge Trophy 2026 Grand Finale, where they will compete for the islandwide championship title.
The tournament forms part of Melwa's broader strategy to strengthen relationships with its nationwide dealer and contractor network while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship and collaboration among construction industry professionals.
