An updated landslide warning notice has been issued in response to heavy rainfall in Sri Lanka. Amber landslide warnings have been issued for five districts. The Irrigation Department has opened two sluice gates of the Polgolla Reservoir due to the heavy rains, raising concerns of flooding in Nilwala, Ging, and Kalugaga.

The director of the hydrology department at the Irrigation Department, SPC Sugeeshwara, noted the risk of flooding in low-lying areas of Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Pasgoda, Akurassa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions in the next 24 hours. Traffic disruptions have been reported in various areas, including the Siambalagoda-Akurassa road due to the overflowing Nilwala River and the Galle-Mapalagama-Elpitiya main road due to a fallen tree.

A landslide warning has been issued for several districts, including Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, and Ratnapura, until 6 AM tomorrow, according to Dr. Wasantha Senadheera, director of the National Building Research Organization.

The Department of Meteorology has also cautioned about thunderstorms in Western, Sabaragamuwa, South, and North-West provinces, as well as Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts. Heavy rains exceeding 100 millimeters are anticipated in Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as Galle and Matara districts.

Meanwhile, the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours which ended at 8.30 this morning was reported from Kegalle - Maliboda area. It is 152 mm.

Also, as the water level of the river in the Kalugage-Kudaganga sub-basin may rise in the next few hours, the Director of the Hydrology Division of the Irrigation Department, S.P.C. Sugishwara, is requesting residents in the low-lying areas of Palinda Kandy and Bulathsinghala Divisional Secretariats to exercise caution.

Meanwhile, residents in the low-lying areas of Weliwetiya-Divithura, Baddegama, Niagama, Neluwa, Thavalama, Akmeemana, Nagoda, Alpitiya, and Bope Poddala are advised to be vigilant, as there is a potential risk of flooding in the vicinity of the Ging Ganga over the next three hours to the next 24 hours, as mentioned by the department.
