The President mentioned this while issuing a congratulatory message for the Ramadan festival.
The President's congratulatory message is as follows:
"The Eid-ul-Fitr festival, celebrated after the sighting of the new moon following the observance of the fast for a month by Islamic devotees around the world, is an extremely important occasion in the Islamic religious calendar.
The Ramadan fast, which is one of the five pillars on which the Islamic religion is built, reflects the importance of being distant from worldly desires and staying in an ideal practice consisting of sacrifice and austerity.
The Ramadan celebration brings many very important humanitarian and social messages to the entire world community. The pinnacle meaning of the Ramadan celebration is planting empathy within the hearts of devotees. That is, building individuals who do not hesitate to embrace the other with a sense of empathy and brotherhood while making the hunger of the other and its pain an experience of one's own. During that time, the behavior of devotees is nourished by the noble qualities of peace, equality, and coexistence, which are the other meanings of Ramadan. They perform Ramadan fasting practices for a period of a full month, and that period is the time for their spiritual nourishment. Therefore, I believe that the Ramadan season is a period that teaches the lesson of humanity and brotherhood to the world through life example.
This time, the Eid-ul-Fitr festival has to be celebrated at a moment when the entire world is facing a difficult and challenging situation. I pray that through the blessings of the practices and prayers fulfilled in this month of Ramadan, this situation will quickly pass away and the coexistence world that everyone expects, where the rights and freedoms of everyone are protected and where peace and prosperity remain, will be created.
Also, just as we faced other challenges successfully, we as a government are committed with a firm determination to face this challenge fearlessly, manage it well, and maintain the economy and public life of this country progressively without distress or collapse.
While inviting everyone to join with that program and provide the necessary strong helping hand by setting aside differences, I offer my heartfelt congratulations for an Eid-ul-Fitr day filled with peace and harmony to the Sri Lankan as well as the world-dwelling brotherly Muslim people.
Eid Mubarak!"
