An increase in rainfall across the island is anticipated after tomorrow, May 6th, as the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone—where winds from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres meet—continues to influence local weather. The Department of Meteorology released a statement noting that showers or thundershowers are likely in most areas after 1:00 p.m. today.

Heavily overcast skies remain expected over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as the Ampara district, with morning showers also a possibility. Some locations within the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and Eastern provinces, along with the Galle, Matara, and Polonnaruwa districts, may experience fairly heavy falls exceeding 50 mm.

Fairly strong winds gusting between 30 and 40 km/h will occasionally affect the Northern and North-central provinces and the Hambantota district. Additionally, misty conditions are predicted in parts of the Central and Uva provinces and the Ampara district during the early hours of the morning.

Members of the public are urged by the department to take necessary precautions against potential damage caused by lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers.
