The National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU) says that more than 70,000 premises were inspected on the first day of the three-day special national dengue mosquito control programme launched by the Ministry of Health and Mass Media today (08).

The programme is scheduled to continue until 10 June and is being carried out across 72 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions in 14 districts.

Reviewing the progress of the first day at the Disaster Management Unit of the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, said the opening day of the campaign had been highly successful.

He noted that inspections carried out at homes, schools, and government institutions had enabled health authorities to identify a large number of mosquito breeding sites and locations containing dengue mosquito larvae.

Dr. Kannangara further stated that legal action had been initiated against responsible parties after dengue mosquito breeding sites were found in several institutions and premises.

He added that a significant number of breeding grounds had been identified in abandoned, ownerless, and currently unused premises.

The nationwide programme is being conducted jointly by the Tri-Forces, Police, government institutions, MOH offices, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, village committees, public health inspectors, medical officers, dengue assistants, and other health personnel, who have been carrying out house-to-house inspections in coordinated teams.

The Dengue Control Unit also expressed hope for continued public cooperation and support from all stakeholders during the remaining two days of the programme.
