The party will win by being boldly, confidently, and authentically Labour, Burnham announced during his speech. He pledged to build a new politics focused on problem-solving rather than point-scoring, noting that the current generation of politicians failed ordinary people. The country took a series of wrong turns in the 1980s by centralising political power and privatising economic power, he added.
A culture of one Labour team will be built relentlessly as his first priority, Burnham stated. He aims to establish unity by respecting all shades of opinion, though his top team remains undecided. He also paid tribute to Keir Starmer, thanking him for his service and noting that the party went from its worst defeat to its best victory under his predecessor's leadership.
The approval of the Hillsborough Law felt like coming full circle, Burnham mentioned, recalling his journey that began in 2009 when he confronted how the country turned its back on working-class communities.
Deputy leader Lucy Powell opened the special party conference, praising Starmer for saving the Labour Party.
Meanwhile, political analysts note that Burnham faces immediate pressure to find £9 billion a year for defence spending. His appointment for chancellor will also send a significant signal to politicians and bond markets, as the UK sees another transition of power without a prime minister completing a full term between general elections.
