World Elephant Day falls today (12).

Issuing a statement for Elephant Day, the Ministry of Environment stated that the attention of the entire world focuses at this time on the safety and survival of elephants, who are a unique symbol of the ecosystem as well as a critical link in biodiversity.

The statement also pointed out that adverse environmental impacts emerged due to the blockage of travel routes and elephant corridors caused by the irregular development process that existed in the country for many years.

Environmentalists point out that although World Elephant Day falls today, the elephant population in the country currently stands at a minimal level.

The Wildlife Conservation Forum states that 199 elephant deaths have been reported from the country so far this year. A majority of those deaths occurred due to shooting, while elephant deaths are also reported due to stepping on jaw-exploding devices (hakka patas), coming into contact with unsafe electric fences, and falling into unprotected agricultural wells, forum highlighted.
