Developing Padukka as a vegetable-growing village to benefit Colombo suburbs

Padukka-Miriyagalla, a rural area near Colombo, is set to undergo development as a vegetable-growing village to ensure the steady supply of affordable vegetables to the suburbs of Colombo.

This initiative, led by the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to address the challenges of high transportation costs and food wastage associated with bringing vegetables from distant economic centers.

Here are the key steps of this development project:

Phase 1: Cultivating 250 Acres of Vegetables
In the initial phase, the project will focus on cultivating vegetables across 250 acres of land in Padukka-Miriyagalla. This substantial agricultural effort is intended to increase the local production of vegetables.

Subsidies for Farmers
To incentivize and support local farmers in this endeavor, the government plans to provide a subsidy of 5 lakh rupees. This financial assistance aims to reduce the financial burden on farmers and encourage their active participation in vegetable cultivation.

By developing Padukka-Miriyagalla as a vegetable-growing hub, the government aims to enhance the availability of vegetables in the suburbs of Colombo, promote self-sufficiency in vegetable production, and ultimately offer cost-effective and fresh produce to the public. This project aligns with broader efforts to improve food security and reduce dependency on distant sources of agricultural products.
