NPC DELEGATES POWER TO IGP OVER OIC TRANSFERS

The National Police Commission (NPC) has delegated the authority to appoint and transfer Officers-in-Charge (OICs) of police stations to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Previously, all appointments and transfers for police officers above the rank of OIC were handled by the National Police Commission.

However, the IGP had repeatedly argued that this was a significant hindrance to police administration.

He highlighted that the inability to immediately transfer an OIC due to corruption, malpractice, or inefficiency posed a serious obstacle to the effective management of the police force.

As a result of the IGP's consistent representations, the NPC has now given the police chief the power to make these decisions.

An NPC official stated that while the IGP now has this authority, the commission retains the power to hear appeals.

If an OIC is transferred or removed from their position without a valid reason, they can appeal to the Police Commission, which will then investigate and rectify the decision if an injustice has occurred.
