Nine estate workers were hospitalised today (October 1) after being attacked by wasps while plucking tea leaves at the Maussakelle Estate, which falls under the Maskeliya Police Division.
The injured workers were admitted to the Maskeliya Divisional Hospital.
The workers who are currently receiving indoor treatment stated that the wasp nest, which was attached to a tree in the tea plantation, became agitated after being struck by a hawk attempting to break the hive, leading to the swarm attacking them.
A Maskeliya Hospital official stated that five female and four male estate workers were hospitalised following the attack.
Of the nine workers, five female workers are currently receiving indoor treatment, while the remaining four workers received treatment at the Outpatient Department and have since been discharged.
