Kotahena Police today (October 10) informed the Colombo Additional Magistrate that an extensive investigation has been launched into the discovery of a body in a garbage canal at Ingurukade Junction.
Investigating officers stated that the body has been placed in the Police Mortuary pending the post-mortem examination.
One of the investigating officers further informed the court that the deceased was allegedly abducted on the night of the 28th of last month by a group of individuals near the Kotahena fuel station while he was with his brother in the Jampettah area.
However, he revealed to the court that the deceased's brother did not report the incident to the police and concealed the information.
The police reported that on the 29th of last month, the Grandpass Police received a tip-off via the 119 emergency hotline that an unidentified body was floating in a canal.
After notifying all police stations across the country, the deceased's relatives came forward and identified the body.
The investigation was subsequently initiated based on a complaint lodged by those relatives with the Kotahena Police.
The investigating officer further revealed that the deceased was found to be an eyewitness to a serious murder that occurred in 2018.
The police informed the court that the official post-mortem procedures are scheduled to be carried out.
