A large section of the Mallawapitiya - Indulgodakanda road near the Thampana Reservoir in the Kurunegala Doratiyawa police area suffered a landslide today (28) .
The incident reportedly poses a severe risk to the stability of the Thampana Reservoir.
The landslide damaged two houses located below the affected area. Fortunately, no lives were lost as the occupants, aware of the risk, had evacuated earlier.
The Thampana Reservoir is managed by the Kurunegala Municipal Council and is a source of water for the Kurunegala city. The reservoir is situated on high ground about 8 kilometers from Kurunegala town.
The prevailing adverse weather conditions and the landslide are cited as the cause of the heightened risk to the reservoir.
Reports indicate a very dangerous situation is developing as soil is washing down into the reservoir from the hillside above, and the controlling officer's quarters belonging to the reservoir are also subsiding.
Although steps were taken to release water from the reservoir, reports state a large volume of water remains due to continued rainfall.
Due to the road damage, traffic is completely halted on the route from Kurunegala via Pilikada to Indulgodakanda.
