Two Police Constables remanded over bribery

The Colombo Chief Magistrate, Asanga S. Bodaragama, today (01) ordered the remand of two Police Constables (PCs) until December 16. 

The officers were accused of soliciting a bottle of liquor as a bribe and accepting Rs. 3,000 to buy it, in exchange for not taking legal action against a cab driver operating without a license.

The remanded officers were identified as Lasitha Madhusanka and Tasin Dilmitha, both PCs attached to the Emergency Call Unit and the City Traffic Division under special duty at the Fort Police Station.

The court issued the order after considering the facts related to a complaint filed by an individual from the Wariyapola area. 

The Bribery Commission produced the suspects in court this afternoon.

The Bribery Commission informed the court that the two PCs were arrested on charges of soliciting a bottle of liquor and requesting and accepting Rs. 3,000 for its purchase, as a bribe to refrain from taking legal action against the complainant for traffic offenses, including operating his Bolero cab without a driver's license and committing several other traffic violations.

Investigating officers informed the court that further investigations into the suspects are ongoing.

After considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered both suspects to be further remanded until December 16.
