Consumer groups call for controlled price on domestic gas

A controlled price for domestic gas is being requested by consumer organisations from the government, pointing out that such regulation is essential due to frequent inconsistencies in gas price hikes. Consumers also report facing significant hardship as the cost of this essential commodity rises repeatedly.

Laugfs Gas increased the price of a 12.5kg cylinder by Rs. 80 effective from midnight yesterday (06), bringing the new price to Rs. 4,330. The 5kg cylinder rose by Rs. 32, now retailing at Rs. 1,742. This follows a previous hike in January where Laugfs raised prices by Rs. 150 for 12.5kg cylinders and Rs. 65 for 5kg cylinders.

In contrast, Litro Gas prices remained stable over the past three months. A 12.5kg Litro cylinder still costs Rs. 3,690, while the 5kg cylinder is priced at Rs. 1,482. Litro Gas stated that despite rising world market prices, they opted not to increase rates after considering the current domestic situation.

The All Island Canteen and Restaurant Owners' Association warned that food prices may need to rise following the Laugfs Gas price hike. Simultaneously, the National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection urged the government to implement a price cap.

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) noted that it cannot currently intervene in these price hikes because gas is not listed as a price-controlled item. However, a senior official mentioned that intervention remains possible if prices rise unfairly. The CAA also plans to meet with Laugfs Gas management soon to discuss numerous complaints regarding recent gas shortages.
