A 26-year-old mother receiving treatment for severe burn injuries following a house fire in the Namandiya new village in Buttala passed away this morning (18).
The deceased woman is identified as K.D. Suraji Sakunthala. Buttala Police stated that the fire broke out yesterday (17) morning inside a room of the house located near the Mahagoyaya government grain warehouse on the Buttala - Monaragala road.
The father, mother, and their young daughter sustained severe burns when a petrol container in the room caught fire.
Residents and the manager of the nearby government granary, who rushed to the scene after hearing the family's cries, took steps to hospitalize the injured parties.
All three victims received treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Monaragala District General Hospital, where the mother succumbed to her injuries this morning.
Hospital sources mention that her husband, 29-year-old J.M. Diluksha Madushanka, and their 3-year-old daughter, J.M. Onalya, were transferred to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle for further treatment.
Police state that Wellawaya Magistrate Poorna Shyamali is scheduled to conduct the post-mortem examination. Further investigations regarding the incident are underway under the direction of Buttala Police OIC W.M.J. Bandara.
