Peiris clarifies President’s duties remain constant at all times

A President remains in office 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and their role cannot be separated into official or private spheres.

Former Minister Professor G.L. Peiris emphasised this point during a press conference in Colombo, dismissing the ongoing public debate regarding such distinctions as a total myth.

The state maintains an absolute obligation to provide security, transportation, and accommodation for the President regardless of their location or activity.

Professor Peiris noted that whether a leader is traveling abroad, attending a personal event, or even engaging in spiritual practices, they do so with the full weight and protection of their office.

He cited international examples, such as a U.S. President traveling for recreation, to illustrate that security and logistical support remain constant and necessary under international law and tradition.

The Professor further explained that any invitation accepted by the President, whether from a university or a professional body, is accepted in an official capacity rather than as a private citizen.

He described the current confusion as being rooted in the false assumption that such a division exists, calling for a more logical and informed public discussion on the matter.
