Police officer suspended after arriving for inquiry while intoxicated

A police constable attached to the Kataragama Police Station faces immediate suspension after arriving in an intoxicated state to provide a statement at the Southern Province Special Investigation Unit.

The 38-year-old officer, a resident of Pettimaduwa Road, Batuvangala, Neluwa, arrived at the Senior DIG’s office in Matara yesterday (31) for a scheduled inquiry.

Officials present at the unit noticed the constable appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

Chief Inspector Jayasinghe, the Officer-in-Charge of Administration at the Matara Headquarters Police, subsequently directed the officer to the Matara General Hospital for a medical examination.

The examining doctor confirmed the officer’s intoxicated state under medical form number 127/2026.

Following a report to senior management, Assistant Superintendent of Police for Tissamaharama, K.B.D.S. Fernando, ordered the suspension.

The disciplinary action, effective from yesterday (31), cites charges of disgraceful conduct, disobedience of orders, and intoxication.
