Big Match halted following death of student

Principals of St. Sylvester’s College and Vidyartha College decided to stop the 66th annual Big Match midway following the death of a student in a motorcycle collision earlier today. Central Province Governor Professor Sarath Abeykoon proposed the suspension, leading the two school heads to implement the decision after a brief discussion.

The incident involved two Advanced Level students from St. Sylvester’s College who were traveling to perform organizing duties for the match. While one student died at the scene, the second remains in critical condition at the Kandy National Hospital, where doctors are working to save his life.

The match was called off while Vidyartha College was batting, having scored 45 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Respect for the victims and the gravity of the situation prompted the immediate cessation of the sporting event.
