New school energy conservation programme introduced

School students will receive awareness on national energy security to prepare for the potential El Niño weather pattern and the ongoing global fuel crisis.

Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa stated that a new circular was issued to all principals and school heads to foster an energy conservation culture within schools.

The ministry directed schools to implement this program before the end of the first school term, specifically on April 9 or another suitable date.

The initiative, titled 'Surakimu Lanka,' aims to enhance energy efficiency, security, and environmental sustainability across the education system.

Authorities expect to create a behavioural shift in students through attitude changes, encouraging them to carry the message of sustainability back to their parents.

This move is designed to mobilise the wider community to take necessary steps toward energy conservation.
