Iran celebrates National Persian Gulf Day

Every year at the end of April, Iran commemorates National Persian Gulf Day, a holiday celebrating the expulsion of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622.

This year’s events hold particular significance amid the shaky ceasefire with the US and the ongoing blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

The festivities began at Tehran’s Tabiat Bridge with what state media described as a “sports conference” attended by 10,000 people.

“In these circumstances, we must increase resilience and take advantage of the high energy of the people to strengthen the morale of the community,” the deputy minister of sports development told Iran’s Mehr news agency.
