Cabinet approves new committee on Easter attack recommendations

Cabinet approval granted to appoint a new committee to formalise the process of implementing recommendations presented by the Presidential Commission of Inquiry and the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security, which investigated the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

The Cabinet of Ministers agreed with the relevant proposal presented by the President as the Minister of Defence.

Although approval was previously granted at the Cabinet meeting held on May 17, 2021, to implement necessary recommendations to prevent destructive events like the Easter attacks in the future, several obstacles in the practical implementation of those recommendations were identified, including:

The absence of a formal or stable mechanism established thus far to monitor the implementation of recommendations, as well as the inability to measure the current progress of implementing recommendations, is due to the lack of a systematic structure.

To ensure public and national security, Cabinet approval was granted to the proposal presented by the President as the Minister of Defense to establish a committee consisting of representatives from relevant ministries, officials from related state institutions, and subject experts on counter-terrorism activities and national security, to operate a new committee with a more comprehensive organisational structure under the direct supervision of the Presidential Secretariat.
