Health and Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa received the "Tobacco Free Generation" scientific proposal and concept paper prepared by the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA).
The Health Ministry stated that the primary objective of this concept paper is to ensure all children born in the country after 2010 become a generation free from tobacco use.
The document was presented to the Minister at the Health Ministry by NATA Chairman, Specialist Dr Ananda Rathnayaka and LL Amila Isuru from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rajarata.
Deputy Health Minister Dr Hansaka Wijemuni also attended the event.
Two main steps to rescue the future generation from the tobacco menace were emphasised.
These include updating the regulations of the existing National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act to suit present requirements and legally prohibiting access to and use of tobacco products for children born after a specific age limit under the "Tobacco Free Future Generation" concept.
The Health Ministry noted that many countries around the world have already passed such laws.
Specialist Dr Ananda Rathnayaka pointed out that nearly 80% of deaths in the country occur due to non-communicable diseases, with tobacco and alcohol consumption being the leading causes.
The Health Ministry mentioned that approximately 22,000 people die annually in Sri Lanka due to tobacco and alcohol, while nearly 80 million people die worldwide each year from tobacco use.
LL Amila Isuru of the University of Rajarata stated that cigarette use among young children within the school system is increasing to some extent.
He further highlighted that tobacco and alcohol serve as the initial gateway to other serious drugs.
Health Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa expressed his appreciation for the programme and stated that necessary steps will be taken to implement these amendments promptly to ensure public health by removing obstacles to a healthy future.
