Water was released today (30) for the Yala cultivation season following the reconstruction of the Mavil Aru main sluice, which was severely damaged during the recent floods.
The Mavil Aru reservoir feeds nearly 40,000 acres of paddy fields belonging to the Alla Farmer Colony Scheme.
This release will meet the agricultural needs of approximately 10,000 farming families across the Seruwila, Verugal, and Muttur Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The reservoir’s dam and sluice gates were almost destroyed during the previous floods.
Irrigation officials took swift action to prioritize and complete the essential work on the main sluice before the start of the Yala season.
While other renovation work on the reservoir remains ongoing, today's release of water allows farmers in the Alla Scheme to begin their cultivation activities without further delay.
