Sri Lanka becomes the newest member of International Big Cat Alliance

The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) formally welcomed the nation, marking a collaborative effort to bolster global big cat conservation and environmental sustainability. This membership follows a decision initially publicised in April as a bilateral outcome of Indian Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan’s diplomatic visit to the island.

Details of the agreement emerged on 19 April after high-level discussions between the two neighbouring countries. The India-led initiative focuses on the protection of seven major species, including the tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar, and puma.

Participation in the alliance allows Sri Lanka to enhance its wildlife and biodiversity protection through closer cooperation with India. This partnership was revealed alongside various other India-backed projects involving healthcare, housing, and railway rehabilitation.
