A lance corporal from the Sri Lanka Army stands accused of taking Rs.129,600 in bribes from a retired officer. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption apprehended the suspect, who served at the Pandulagama Army Camp in Anuradhapura.
The suspect allegedly promised to assist the retired officer in settling an outstanding retirement loan. Investigations suggest the soldier claimed he could secure twenty-five lakh rupees in financial aid for the victim, soliciting the initial bribe across three separate deposits into a People’s Bank account.
Detectives initiated the sting after the suspect demanded an additional thirteen thousand four hundred and fifty-seven rupees for supposed documentation fees. The arrest took place at approximately 10:30 am on the 30th. Following an appearance before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, the suspect remains in remand custody until the 8th of May.
