Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) last week hosted senior representatives from two of the world’s leading container shipping lines, signalling growing commercial interest in the port as global trade patterns adjust to instability in the Middle East.
Officials from CMA CGM’s overseas office and local representatives of Evergreen Marine Corporation held discussions with HIPG management on the potential introduction of new container services through Hambantota, port officials said.
The visits come amid increasing pressure on traditional shipping routes linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, prompting several global carriers to reassess routing strategies. Hambantota International Port (HIP), located just 10 nautical miles off the main East–West shipping lane, is emerging as a viable alternative hub in the region.
Shipping industry observers note that the current environment has accelerated exploratory engagements, with multiple lines informally assessing HIP’s capacity, turnaround efficiency, and yard availability as part of contingency planning.
Theresa Liu, Senior Deputy General Manager, Commercial and Marketing of HIPG, said the port’s expanding infrastructure, including increased container yard capacity and ongoing investments in handling equipment, has positioned it to respond to shifting demand.
While no formal service announcements have been made, the level of engagement from top-tier global carriers is being viewed as a positive signal for Hambantota’s transition from a primarily bulk and RoRo facility into a more diversified, multi-purpose maritime hub.
The developments reflect a broader structural shift in global shipping, where geopolitical risk, route diversification, and port efficiency are increasingly shaping network decisions. Industry analysts say the current environment presents a strategic window for HIP to attract new liner services and strengthen its position within the Indian Ocean logistics ecosystem.
