The body of a 51-year-old father of one, who disappeared after being swept away by a current while bathing at Katukurunda beach in Kalutara, was recovered yesterday afternoon (04). Kalutara South Police identified the deceased as Suresh Lanka, a resident of the Katukurunda area.
Investigations revealed the victim visited the beach Sunday (03) afternoon with his wife, son, and a group of relatives. While bathing, a sudden wave and current pulled him out to sea.
His son and another youth attempted to swim toward him for a rescue. However, realising the danger the violent currents posed to them, the victim reportedly screamed at the young men to stay back and not risk their lives. Family members expressed deep sorrow, noting that he prioritised the safety of his son and the other youth even as his own life faced peril.
A joint search operation involving the Kalutara Police, Navy, and volunteer lifeguards commenced following the incident. The remains washed ashore this afternoon near the same coastal stretch where he went missing. Further investigations continue under the direction of Chief Inspector Nalaka Gunasekera of the Kalutara South Police.
