Nishantha Kumara Aththo, the son of Danigala Maha Bandaralage, was appointed to the leadership of the Rathugala indigenous community today. The position became vacant following the passing of the previous leader, Suda Wannila Aththo, after an illness.
The appointment took place amidst traditional indigenous rituals performed before the burial of the late leader. During the ceremony, Uruwarige Wannila Aththo, the indigenous leader of Dambana, officially declared the new leader by handing over the bow and axe used by the late Suda Wannila Aththo.
Final rites for the late Suda Wannila Aththo were conducted today in Rathugala with a focus on indigenous customs. The remains were interred on the land where he lived, with numerous leaders from Dambana and other indigenous settlements, as well as many relatives, in attendance.
