Two fresh complaints regarding irregularities in coal imports and electricity generation reached the Coal Commission yesterday, both filed by members of the opposition. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appointed this high-powered Presidential Commission to investigate potential malpractice within the sector. While two members of parliament from the National People's Power previously lodged complaints, New People’s Front leader Sugeeshwara Bandara arrived at the commission this morning to submit his own.
United Republic Front leader Patali Champika Ranawaka also visited the special Presidential Commission yesterday afternoon to file a complaint. Meanwhile, the Free Lawyers organisation sent a questionnaire to the commission's secretary seeking clarity on its operational procedures. The group requested access to documents or decisions outlining the measures taken to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.
The lawyers further enquired whether the commission conducts independent investigations beyond gathering information from individuals and organisations, and specifically which officers or agencies perform such tasks. Their letter also requests a clarification on how legal assistance remains available during the leading of evidence and what role lawyers play in the commission's overall proceedings.
