Early intelligence raised alarm over Negombo Prison tensions, says MP Harshana

Government authorities failed to take appropriate action despite receiving intelligence reports about the volatile situation at the Negombo prison three to four days before the unrest occurred, according to Opposition Member of Parliament Harshana Rajakaruna.

The parliamentarian made these remarks while participating in a parliamentary debate on the matter today (07).

This incident did not occur unexpectedly, as officials remained aware of the tensions but failed to implement proper management or make decisive choices.

The MP noted that the Negombo prison situation reflects the current weakness in national leadership and management, drawing parallels to the government’s inefficient handling of previous crises involving the farming and business communities.

The government lacks the experience required to identify or address problems effectively, and failing to prevent such destruction despite possessing intelligence indicates a serious administrative failure.
