Low pressure area persists to the northeast of Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology issued an announcement stating that a low-pressure area remains situated to the northeast of the country. This system should move away from Sri Lanka within the next 36 hours.

Cloudy skies prevail over most parts of the island. Showers or thundershowers will occur at times today across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western, and Northern provinces, as well as in the Anuradhapura, Galle, and Matara districts.

Very heavy rainfall of approximately 150 mm may occur in certain locations within the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces. Additionally, heavy falls exceeding 100 mm are likely in parts of the Galle and Matara districts.

Isolated showers or thundershowers might develop in the Uva and Eastern provinces after 1:00 pm. The department urges the public to take necessary precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning and temporary strong winds during thundershowers.
