Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa has criticised the current government, saying that if the country’s war heroes had not brought an end to the civil conflict, the President would not have been able to freely travel to Jaffna today without restrictions.
Speaking at a war heroes commemoration held at the Avissawella War Heroes Village on 17 May 2026, Rajapaksa alleged that “political revenge” against military personnel and intelligence officers who were involved in the wartime effort has continued even after the end of the war.
He claimed that members of the armed forces and intelligence services are still facing legal proceedings and imprisonment under the present administration, and further alleged that several senior figures who played key roles during the conflict are being unfairly targeted. He also criticised what he described as politically driven decisions affecting the security sector.
Reiterating that the civil war ended under the leadership of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, he said the contribution of war heroes should be properly recognised and protected.
Rajapaksa added that war veterans, families of fallen soldiers, and disabled servicemen should be honoured, and their sacrifices should not be forgotten. He also questioned recent government decisions regarding changes to senior military appointments, suggesting they may weaken the armed forces ahead of war-related commemorative events.
