Animal rights activists write to IGP

The Animals and Justice organisation, writing to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya, requests a system to be established to promptly publicise details with photographs of cattle or other animals taken into custody by police stations.

The letter, sent under the signature of the president of the association, Venerable Doctor Omalpe Sobhitha Thera, states that large-scale thefts of animals, with or without owners, occur across the island these days.

The letter also notes that although complaints are made to many police stations regarding the theft of cattle, no action is taken.

Sobhitha Thera pointed out in the letter sent to the inspector general of police that when producing arrested animals to court, individuals claiming to be the owners present themselves with fraudulent documents to claim the cattle, but the real owners of those animals are often people from other areas.
