A Police Sergeant and a 23-year-old youth have died following two separate serious road incidents in the Buttala and Peradeniya Police Divisions, Police Headquarters informed.
A youth died during a road incident this morning (01) when the motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with a lorry, on the Gannoruwa–Katugastota Road in Peradeniya.
The rider, who sustained serious injuries, died after being admitted to Peradeniya Hospital.
He has been identified as a 23-year-old resident of Yatiyantota.
The Police Sergeant died during a head-on collision between two motorcycles that occurred yesterday (31) evening on the Yatiyallathota Road in the Buttala Police Division. The police sergeant, who sustained critical injuries, was admitted to Buttala Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The deceased has been identified as a 54-year-old Police Sergeant attached to the Gonaganara Police Station, residing in Udaarawa.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the rider of the other motorcycle was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Police in Buttala and Peradeniya are conducting further investigations into both incidents.
