Justice Minister meets UNICEF Executive Board Chair

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara held talks today (02) with Rein Tammsaar, Chair of the UNICEF Executive Board, and senior representatives visiting Sri Lanka.

Discussions focused on child-related laws, video technology for child testimony, reducing case delays, and strengthening legal protections for children.

The Minister said legal amendments already allow children to give evidence via video link, with implementation underway and judges being trained.

He also highlighted plans to expand legal education on child rights and extend video-evidence facilities beyond the Kandy court complex.

The issue of court delays was also raised, with the Minister citing institutional vacancies as a key challenge being addressed.

UNICEF Deputy Board Chairs and senior officials also attended the meeting.
