Ex-Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal remanded until June 12

Former Southern Province Chief Minister and ex-MP Shan Wijayalal de Silva has been remanded until June 12.

He was arrested this morning (10) by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

The arrest was made when he appeared before the Commission to provide a statement.

He is accused of selecting a manufacturing company outside the standard procurement procedure in 2019, thereby providing undue benefit to the firm in connection with the distribution of chairs to voluntary organisations using Rs. 16.5 million in MP allocations.

He is also alleged to have caused a loss to the state by arranging the distribution and delivery of 16,361 chairs to the homes and offices of 54 Provincial Council members.
