Probe into child’s death at LRH referred to Attorney General

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate Liyan Warushavithana today (11) that the case regarding the death of three-year-old child Amadi Fashlim, who died after being admitted to the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH) in Colombo for treatment of a kidney condition, has been referred for instructions from the Attorney General.

The Magistrate ordered that the case be recalled on October 23.

The order was issued after CID officers submitted facts to court regarding the ongoing investigation.

Reports related to a statement given via Skype by specialist surgeon Dr. Navin Wijekoon, who is said to have performed the surgery, were also submitted to court and had been signed in open court by the previous magistrate on the earlier date of inquiry.

It was also noted in previous proceedings that Dr. Navin Wijekoon, currently residing in Australia, had provided his testimony via Skype.

The Magistrate had earlier directed the CID to authenticate the doctor’s statement through the Australian High Commission and submit it to court.

According to the complaint filed by the parents from Kotahena, the child was admitted for treatment of a left kidney condition, but complications during surgery allegedly caused damage to the healthy right kidney, leading to the child’s death, prompting the initial investigation by Borella Police.
