Suspect arrested for sharp weapon attack in Medawachchiya

Police in Medawachchiya have arrested a suspect involved in an incident where a salon owner was attacked with a sharp weapon after the suspect entered the shop in the Medawachchiya area, police said.

The suspect was arrested yesterday (17) by a team of officers from the Medawachchiya Police Station, and the sharp weapon used in the assault was also taken into police custody.

A video showing the brutal attack on the shop owner inside the premises on the 9th of this month had circulated on social media and electronic media in recent days.

A complaint regarding the incident was also filed on the 10th, police said.

Acting on this, police arrested the 29-year-old suspect, a resident of the Medawachchiya area.

Although some media reports had suggested the attack may have been carried out over a ransom demand, police investigations have so far revealed that this was not a ransom-related incident.

Instead, it has been found that the assault stemmed from a long-standing personal dispute between the suspect and the business owner, police said.
