A female lawyer attached to the legal division of a commercial bank in Colombo was arrested last night (18) while allegedly stealing several items, including goat meat, chicken, and cashews, from a supermarket in Ratmalana, police from the Mount Lavinia Headquarters Police said.
The stolen items included 520 grams of chicken worth Rs. 5,290, 250 grams of goat meat, fried cashews, a toothbrush, and a packet of lunch sheets, all of which were found hidden in her handbag.
Police said the supermarket alerted them after CCTV footage showed a woman secretly placing several items into her bag while pretending to shop, and indicating that she was about to leave the premises.
Acting immediately, police officers intercepted the woman as she was leaving the supermarket and searched her handbag with the assistance of a female officer, recovering the concealed goods.
Police further stated that the suspect lawyer had also allegedly stolen fish from the same supermarket in a similar manner on the previous day (17).
Although her lawyer ID listed an address in Pannipitiya, police said the 47-year-old suspect is actually a resident of the Ratmalana area.
Mount Lavinia Headquarters Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
