The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court today (19) ordered the release on bail of the current General Manager of the Lanka Salt Company, who had been arrested by the Bribery Commission over allegations of causing a financial loss of nearly Rs. 14.3 million to the government by acting outside proper procurement procedures.
Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered that the suspect be released on two surety bails of Rs. 5 million each, and also imposed a foreign travel ban.
The order was issued after the suspect was produced before court by officials of the CIABOC.
The accused, identified as Rathnayake Mudiyanselage Gunaratne, is the current General Manager of the Lanka Salt Company.
He was arrested earlier today around 9.55 a.m. by CIABOC officials.
According to the commission, the alleged offence relates to the procurement of salt packaging materials for the Hambantota Salt Company without following proper procurement procedures, using a falsified re-order, resulting in a loss of approximately Rs. 14.3 million to the state.
