Providing new relief to child witnesses in discussion

A discussion regarding facilities for children to give evidence through video technology for cases involving children, the Children and Young Persons Ordinance, and expediting such cases, took place today (22) at the Ministry of Justice.
Justice and National Integration Minister Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara and a group of United Nations representatives held the discussion.
Attention focused on providing video technology facilities for children to give evidence in cases involving children, the Children and Young Persons Ordinance, and expediting legal proceedings related to children.
The capability of obtaining evidence from children through video technology during court proceedings is prepared in accordance with amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Minister stated.
Efforts are underway to brief judges on this process and implement the necessary arrangements.
The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Violence against Children Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid, UNICEF Representative Emma Brigham, and UNICEF Child Protection Specialist Dr. Hemamal Jayawardena participated in the occasion.
