Two Galle Municipal Council employees arrested for bribery

A revenue inspector and a field worker from the Galle Municipal Council were arrested today (25) by officials from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption for allegedly soliciting a Rs. 5,000 bribe.

The Commission took action following a complaint from a businessman.

The suspects reportedly demanded the money to expedite the process of paying taxes to the Galle Municipal Council for displaying an advertisement board for a paint shop at a hardware store, and to provide the documentation recording the payment.

The revenue inspector faces charges of soliciting a bribe through the second suspect, while the field worker was taken into custody for demanding and accepting the payment on the instructions of the first suspect.

Both individuals are set to be presented before the Galle Magistrate's Court.
