Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe stated that the Central Bank carries no liability for the controversial $2.5 million treasury funds theft.
Samagi Jana Balawegaya Member of Parliament Rauff Hakeem raised the issue in Parliament today (25) while addressing the debate on the National Environmental Amendment Bill.
According to the MP, the Governor made these remarks before the Committee on Public Finance, asserting that the Central Bank remains unattached to the incident.
"While investigating the incident where foreign debt payments were directed to an incorrect account, the Central Bank Governor told the Finance Committee that they are not liable. He claimed there was no need to be accountable under the Foreign Exchange Act. The Attorney General’s Department also approved this. I maintained that under the provisions of that Act, all institutions must be held accountable. The Foreign Exchange Act is clear," the MP stated.
