Nuwara Eliya Magistrate Buddhika Harshani Dharmadasa granted permission today for police to detain and interrogate three suspects for 48 hours in connection with the murder of a physiotherapist at a tourist resort. The court authorized the detention following a formal request from Nuwara Eliya Police.
The suspects include 43-year-old Jayasundara Mudiyanselage Champika Sriyan Jayasundara from Narammala, his 35-year-old wife Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Nethmi Amaya Ratnayake, and 49-year-old Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha driver Jayasinghe Arachchige Rajitha Saliya Samarasinghe, who allegedly assisted in the killing. Officers from the Walana Anti-Corruption Unit arrested the primary suspect and his wife in Kayts, Jaffna, while they travelled on a bus from Wellawatte to Jaffna, before handing them over to Nuwara Eliya Police last night.
Police arrested the driver separately for his role in the incident. Investigators now search for a security forces member suspected of abetting the murder.
