Foreigner arrested at BIA with illegal cigarettes worth 4.2 million rupees

A foreign national who brought a stock of illegal foreign cigarettes worth 4.2 million rupees into the country was arrested by Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.


The suspect arrived at the Katunayake airport yesterday (28) at around 19:11 tonight on flight 'MU 6017' from China.


The foreigner, identified as an employee of a private sector business establishment, aroused the suspicion of customs officials when he attempted to leave through the "Green Channel" meant for passengers with nothing to declare at the airport arrival terminal.


Customs officials subsequently inspected his luggage and managed to find 140 cartons of foreign cigarettes hidden very sophisticatedly inside, containing a total number of 28,000 cigarettes, according to Sri Lanka Customs.


Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Katunayake airport conducted further investigations regarding the matter and ordered the forfeiture of the entire stock of arrested cigarettes.
