Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama remanded a suspect until July 16 in connection with the fraudulent misappropriation of over Rs. 40 million linked to vehicle sales.
The suspect allegedly promised to facilitate vehicle sales during an exhibition held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) provided details to the court regarding the case today (2), noting that a separate legal matter concerning the same type of vehicle racket is pending at the Homagama Magistrate’s Court.
Investigations revealed that the suspect utilised a false identity to deceive individuals at exhibitions held at the venue, claiming to assist in selling vehicles that were otherwise difficult to market.
The CID further explained that the suspect maintained two stalls within the exhibition hall to orchestrate the scheme.
Through these stalls, the suspect brought together buyers and sellers to conduct the illicit activities.
Citing ongoing investigations, the CID requested that the court deny bail for the suspect.
After considering these submissions, the Magistrate issued the remand order until the specified date.
