Senior prison officials summoned to discuss Negombo Prison clash

All senior prison officials are being called to compulsorily attend a meeting tomorrow at 7.30 a.m. to address the recent unrest at Negombo Prison and develop strategies to prevent similar issues in other facilities.

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara announced this directive during today's parliamentary session.

Referring to details of the clash, minister added that the initial conflict among inmates started around 11a.m. on July 5 which was found to be not a dispute between inmates and staff. That incident led to 35 injuries and two deaths, which authorities brought under control.

The Minister attributed the conflict to two rivalry factions linked to drug syndicates and underworld activities.

A second clash broke out the following morning as inmates were receiving meals and prepared for court appearances.

Minister added that authorities recently implemented strict measures to stop illegal substances from entering the prison, and inmates who provided information to management became the primary targets of the attacks.

During the unrest, an organised group destroyed CCTV cameras within the facility.

While many inmates suffered injuries, several officers died after being attacked with bricks and sticks, the minister expressed his respect for those who served until the end.

The minister warned that if they had exited the prison, they could have caused significant destruction in the surrounding area.

Reports also indicate that inmates gained access to weapons during the disturbance.

The Minister emphasised that he is presenting the information currently available, noting that details might change following future investigations.
